What Is 24-Hour Care and How Does It Work?
24-hour care provides continuous, around-the-clock support for individuals who require supervision, assistance, or hands-on care both day and night. Unlike live-in care, where a caregiver has designated sleep and break periods, 24-hour care ensures that a caregiver is awake and available at all times.
This level of care is often recommended for individuals with advanced dementia, significant mobility limitations, high fall risk, frequent nighttime needs, or complex care situations that require constant attention.
A 24-hour caregiver can assist with:
• Personal care such as bathing, dressing, and grooming
• Mobility assistance and transfers
• Medication reminders
• Meal preparation and hydration monitoring
• Dementia and Alzheimer's support
• Fall prevention and safety supervision
• Transportation and accompaniment to appointments
• Light housekeeping and laundry
• Companionship and emotional support
• Overnight assistance and monitoring
How Does 24-Hour Care Work?
To provide uninterrupted care, caregivers work in rotating shifts, ensuring someone is always awake, alert, and available to assist the client. As one caregiver's shift ends, another arrives to take over, providing seamless continuity of care.
This arrangement allows for:
• Immediate assistance at any time of day or night
• Continuous supervision for safety and peace of mind
• Support with frequent overnight needs
• Reduced risk of falls, wandering, or medical emergencies going unnoticed
Who Benefits from 24-Hour Care?
24-hour care may be appropriate for individuals who:
• Wake frequently throughout the night
• Need assistance with toileting or transfers overnight
• Are at risk for falls or wandering
• Have advanced dementia or cognitive impairment
• Require constant supervision for safety
• Are recovering from surgery, illness, or hospitalization and need intensive support
Benefits of 24-Hour Care
• Continuous awake supervision and support
• Enhanced safety and fall prevention
• Immediate response to emergencies or nighttime needs
• Comfort of remaining at home
• Personalized one-on-one care
• Peace of mind for family members
At Always Caring of Connecticut, our 24-hour care services are designed to provide families with confidence and reassurance, knowing their loved one has dedicated support every hour of the day and night while remaining safe and comfortable at home.
Are two caregivers required for 24 hour care?
Yes. In most cases, 24-hour care requires at least two caregivers, and often more, to safely cover all hours of the day and night. Because 24-hour care means a caregiver is awake and available at all times, caregivers work in rotating shifts rather than living in the home and sleeping overnight.
Common arrangements include:
• Two 12-hour shifts (day and night)
• Three 8-hour shifts
• A team of caregivers rotating throughout the week to ensure consistent coverage
This differs from live-in care, where one caregiver resides in the home and is provided with sleep time and breaks.
Live-in care means a caregiver lives in the home and sleeps overnight, providing assistance as needed.
24-hour care means caregivers work in shifts so that someone is awake and actively available 24 hours a day.
At Always Caring of Connecticut, we assess each client's needs to determine whether live-in care or 24-hour care is the most appropriate and cost-effective solution. Many clients do very well with live-in care, while those who need frequent overnight assistance, have advanced dementia, or are at high risk for falls may benefit from 24-hour care.
